Choosing who you work with (from the airport (LAX))

Choosing who you work with (from the airport (LAX)) Im sitting at the airport after spending the week in Texas.  I was at an awesome conference and learned a lot.  I like going to conferences that are different than where I normally go the different perspectives are important. Today I got on my Southwest flight and there was an empty middle seat near the front.  I asked if it was taken and the guy got all huffy and made a lot of grunting unhappy noises and a scene as he got up and slid over.  This happens when a couple is travelling together and hoping they get a seat between them. The jerk had put his seatbelt on, even though we were told it was a full flight, and couldnt believe someone (me) had the nerve to ask him if I could sit in the empty seat. You know what I love?  Since I got laid off Ive been able to choose who I get to sit by. When I had my job I didnt have much of a choice of who I had to work with. In the past Ive worked with people that had really bad body odor, Ive worked with people who have been mean, offensive, unmotivated or crude.  Ive worked with people who belittled everyone and Ive worked with people who I would not hang out with for one minute after work.  If I wanted to get paid I had to do it. Since I left Corporate America Ive been able to choose who I work with.  There have been a few bombs, of course, but heres the awesome part: when I/we realized it wasnt a good relationship, we parted ways. We could move on. I LOVE not having to work with jerks.    I havent had to for a few years but there are two people that I remember that just didnt work out at all.  They were both towards the beginning of my JibberJobber journey.  Since then Ive been a lot more careful to choose my relationships better, and its been awesome to not have jerks forced on me. How about you?  Can you choose who you work with?   It can be a priceless experience! How to write a powerful one page resume (5 tips)

How to write a powerful one page resume (5 tips) Hundreds of people a day ask Google the most common resume question: “How long should it be?” There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. You wouldn’t use the same resume to apply to be a VP of Finance at a Fortune 500 company as you would to make sandwiches somewhere. But for people with under 10 years of experience, one page is almost always all you need. At that point, adding more pages is probably a waste of time. Fortunately, there are some straightforward ways to make sure your resume is just one page. Good news is, they also tend to make resumes more effective. 1. Leave the unnecessary out If you think more is better when it comes to resumes, you don’t read dozens of them a day. But recruiters and hiring managers do. Showing a diversity of experience and skills can be effective, but done wrong this can do more harm than good. The best thing you can do is focus and only include what’s relevant for the job you’re applying for. Another place to cut unnecessary fluff is responsibilities. Instead of writing all the things you used to do in your old position, focus only on the ones that had impact or are directly related to the position you’re applying for. When writing your bullets, mention the real achievement to make each of them count. In practice, that would mean: As Laszlo Bock explains: Instead of being too general: Responsible for negotiating service contracts with XYZ Say it in a way that shows your impact: Negotiated 30% ($500k) reduction in costs with XYZ to perform post-delivery support by designing and using results from an online auction of multiple vendor 2. Share what makes you proud This part of your one page resume will allow you to squeeze more professional experience in. With a single sentence you can leave a lasting impression by describing something that really made you proud in your professional life. In the most proud of section you have the opportunity to share more about your personality too. I personally shared that I’m proud of fighting Psoriasis. In the description I explained how many books I read, how I changed my lifestyle, and how I started writing my own blog to share my journey with others. My employer told me that it “showed that you’re a real fighter and a persistent person.” These were the qualities they were looking for and why they called me in for an interview. 3. Show skills and passion through side projects One of the best ways a one page resume can really stand out is through side projects or volunteering. These are a great way to show potential employer that you like to learn and are curious. Whether it’s writing your own blog, organizing events, or making your own podcast, add it in. If you manage to match at least one side project with your passion and the job you’re applying for, potential employers will trust that you can do the job. This strategy is particularly useful when you’re changing industries. If you worked in banking but was always interested in tech, you can show your passion for tech through a side project. 4. Personality and culture fit Jack is a very, very smart guy. He has years of experience and great ideas. But he doesn’t like to work in a team, he’s a sole-player. He always wants his idea to be the winning one and he gets angry if it’s not. He isn’t a good listener and doesn’t like to participate in team events. When he doesn’t agree with something, it’s very difficult to help him understand the other point of view and it often ends up in fights. Would you want to work with Jack? Whatever the answer, the truth is that Jack wouldn’t fit in every company. And his potential employer should know his personality right from the start. A good practice is to research the culture of the company you’re applying for beforehand. Check their website, about page, social media accounts, Glassdoor, anything that will give you a good idea about what type of people work there. Write down all the things you have in common and then incorporate some of them in your resume. 5. Make sure you have the right audience for your one page resume I recently had a Twitter chat with someone called Stela. The person reacted to an article which explains how a one page resume is almost the only way to go. As much as I believe in the power of a well-written one page resume, I’m with Stela. Writing a resume is like writing anything else. It’s all about the audience your content is for. As Stela said, for some fields or jobs this type of resume might get the job done. So before you decide to use it, check the best practices for your particular field properly. Ask people who got jobs there, reach out to them on Linkedin or research Quora. Looking for a job is a difficult task. It consists of many steps, research, persistency, and a dose of positivity. A well written one page resume can not only make you feel proud and confident, but it will put you in front of other candidates. Have you tried a one page resume yourself? Be Confident Smile and Say Thank You!

Be Confident Smile and Say Thank You! Lucinda is an excellent marketer, confident in her abilities. She knows her products, her market, her customers and her competition incredibly well. She’s creative and energetic, with a passion for her products that shows in everything she does. Lucinda is quite successful. She wins  office awards for brand performance, and  publicly thanked by managers and peers. But Lucinda hates the public recognition. Why? Because she hates saying thank you! Saying thank you, graciously accepting credit for what you have accomplished, is an important skill. When you say, ‘it was nothing’ or ‘anyone could have done it’ you undermine your own value. Was it really that simple to grow a brand in the face of newly launched competitors? Was is really that easy to cut costs in your department without losing people or productivity? If it was, why is the company paying you? Confidence vs. Arrogance Why is it hard to say thank you when someone complements you? Most of us worry about appearing arrogant, over-confident, or pushy. In reality, if you worry about being considered arrogant, youre unlikely to be that way. The differences between people who are arrogant, and those who are justifiably proud of their accomplishments  are simple.  An arrogant person markets themselves aggressively, taking credit from others and focusing only on themselves. This is about dominance, and often hides low self-esteem or profound self-doubt. It’s as if they are saying ‘I don’t think I’m good, so I will flood you with information about how wonderful I am and you will never notice.’ But we always do! Tell the arrogant person he’s done a good job and he’s not likely to say ‘thank you.’ Instead, he builds up himself and his accomplishment even more, telling you how great he is, until you are sorry you brought it up! People who are confident in themselves don’t need to put anyone else down to make themselves look better. They can accept a compliment, and talk about their accomplishments without being overbearing. Because they aren’t trying to hide their fears of incompetence, they are comfortable giving credit to all who deserve it, including themselves. Tell this kind of person that she did a great job, and she’ll thank you for the complement. You’ll hear much less ‘I’ in her response than you heard from her arrogant counterpart. How to say thank you It is possible to thank someone for recognizing your achievements without sounding arrogant. And yet, so many of us still struggle to do it. And yet by not taking credit for our hard work, we appear less confident! Saying thank you isn’t that hard. You just say two little words. Say them out loud now: “Thank you.’ Try that the next time someone complements you. If just ‘thank you’ feels too short, here are some other options: Thank you, I enjoyed working on the project Thank you, I am proud of this contribution to the business There are really endless possibilities.  Heres two more: Thank you, I am also pleased with how it turned out Thank you, I am proud of our team’s success Don’t downplay your achievements. Don’t undermine your own confidence. If you don’t consider yourself worthy of recognition, why should anyone else?

Do You Need To Hire A Professional Resume Writer

Do You Need To Hire A Professional Resume Writer Do you really need to hire a professional to write your resume? If you dont have the time, energy or inclination to write your own resume, then hiring a professional resume writer is better than the uninspired document you might come up with. Ive seen horrible resumes and Ive seen awesome resumes. There is a difference. Most often, the bad ones are written by people who do not know how to document their accomplishments.   These bad resumes just list job duties. And when this happens, the bad resumes all look the same. A good resume shows how youve been successful in past roles. Your resume tells your story and conveys your style and personality. This is NOT easy to do. You also have to understand how recruiters think and how ATS (applicant tracking systems) work in order to use the right keywords. The bottom line is you will need a resume. Just keep in mind that a resume is a small part of your job search. The resume might open a door. But it is the interview that seals the deal. I Dont Write Resumes In my opinion, job seekers put way too much emphasis on this document. I dont want to support their obsession so I purposefully do not write resumes. However, I do consult and collaborate with highly skilled executive resume writers. The good ones understand the hiring process, the thought process and technology used by recruiters, and can craft amazing stories for their clients. Here are the professional resume writers I recommend. Objectively Evaluate Your Resume If you have applied to multiple jobs and your phone isnt ringing (or you havent received an email for a phone screen) then it is safe to say your resume isnt working! Its almost impossible to evaluate your own resume, so ask someone to help you with this. You can download this resume review checklist to evaluate your resume. If youve reached the point where you feel you do need a professional resume writer, then finding someone is step one. Dont just rely on a Google search for top resume writers. You want to work with someone you know, like and trust! This is an investment in your future. Check out these recommended resume writers. Not sure what a resume writer does? Executive resume writer, Meg Guiseppi, provided insight here  What Do Professional Resume Writers Do? Whats Your Investment? Hiring a writer to help you craft your resume can cost anywhere from $49 to $4,900 or more. As is true with any purchase, you pay for what you get. To better understand the level of service provided and how to evaluate resume writers, lets hear from some resume writers I respect. How To Find A Resume Writer Donna Svei of AvidCareerist, put this together to help you identify the best resume writer for you! Finding the best resume writer for YOU is important. Not all resume writers work the same way or produce the same types of resumes. You want to work with someone who understands your occupation and has experience writing about it! And dont miss her four warnings about what to look out for when investigating professional resume writing services. There are scams out there. How To Evaluate A Resume Writer There are a lot of resume  writers and not all are created equal. Conduct your due diligence  and be sure you select the best one for you. Lisa Rangel of Chameleon Resumes  suggests evaluating resume writers by asking these questions: Have they worked at a search firm and/or in corporate recruiting in their past career? What real-world hiring and recruiting expertise do they have? How recent is that expertise? To see more great questions you should be asking, go read her article on  how to evaluate the best resume writer for you. Feedback On Resume Writing Services LinkedIn is a great way to share thoughts, ideas and opinions. I highly recommend you check out this article on LinkedIn and review the 105+ comments about resume writing services. Dont Forget About Your LinkedIn Profile You need an awesome LinkedIn profile too! What You Should Show Off When Changing Jobs Or Careers

What You Should Show Off When Changing Jobs Or Careers Deciding to change careers, or even change jobs, is a big decision, and once you have made the decision it is important to make sure you do everything you can to ensure your change is a successful one. This includes showing off the right skills and experiences that will make you look impressive to potential employers. Leadership: Employers are looking for people who can lead themselves but can also lead others if they need it. Leadership skills are important in nearly every career path, so make sure you show it off. Teamwork: When you are working for a company, you are part of a team. No one works completely alone. If you are easy to work with in a team you will be an asset to your potential employer. Customer Service: Customers are everything to a company. And if a company wants to do well they must have exceptional customer service. If you can show that you have customer service skills that are better than your candidates, you will be in good shape to get the job. Work Well Without Supervision: Employers do not want to micro manage their employees. It is not efficient. They want to teach their employees what to do and let them go at it. If you are able to work well without someone constantly checking your work, then you will be able to do well and not only get the job, but you will be able to advance in the company. These are just a few skills you could show off, but they are applicable and desirable for almost any job you could possibly choose. If you can show those skills off, you will be able to show your potential employers what you can do for them.
